Comprehensive Plan for Northfield 2008

Last year I attended a comprehensive plan open house that was packed with hundreds of Northfield community members.  We were invited to give our input on the new plan.  We poured over maps, made lists of likes and dislikes and made our mark on the future of Northfield.  A draft of that plan has been released and these are a few of my favorite things from the new comprehensive plan.  Thank you to everyone who contributed to this project.

Chapter Three – Community Identity

  • Support small-scale, farm-to-table programs.
  • Preserve historic sites and structures.
  • Continue to support local schools and colleges.

Chapter Four – Land Use

  • The small town character will be enhanced.
  • The natural environment will be protected, enhanced and better integrated into the community.
  • New and redeveloped residential communities will have strong neighborhood qualities.
  • Environmentally-sensitive and sustainable practices will be integrated into new and redeveloped areas.

Chapter Five – Environmental Resources

  • Develop and approve a city-wide sustainability plan.
  • Conserve energy in public and private sector development areas.
  • Promote the reduction of solid waste generated.
  • Increase the density of the community’s urban forest.
